The Daily News

Daily News

The Daily News, a New York City tabloid newspaper, was founded in 1919 and is the oldest American newspaper published daily. The paper is currently owned by Tronc, the successor to Tribune Publishing. The Daily News has long had a reputation for being a highly conservative publication, but in recent years its editorial positions have shifted toward the center to left of the political spectrum. It is a competitor of the New York Post, and many of the newspaper’s columnists have gone on to prominent careers in journalism or public life.

The paper’s early focus on political wrongdoing and social intrigue, including the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to the latter’s abdication, established it as a dominant force in popular culture. It also featured intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, and a sports section. The Daily News was an early user of xerographic photo printing, which enabled it to include large photographs on its pages.

Over the past decade, technological changes have caused massive disruption to local journalism in the United States. Many local newspapers have closed, leaving vast areas without traditional news sources. This lack of access to information about their communities has real consequences for people who rely on these sources.

In Death of the Daily News, author Andrew Conte follows one small town in southwestern Pennsylvania as it struggles to survive after losing its local newspaper. The book provides an important perspective on the future of local journalism in an era of profound change.
